WHEREAS the Konawaena Football program has a theme word - Perseverance.
In the year that this storied high school celebrated its 100 years of existence, the
2021 football team exemplified the true definition of perseverance; and
WHEREAS every player on the roster suffered the effects of a missed season in
2020, with all the other obstacles that the covid pandemic had created. With players
and coaches leaving the program, the initial start to the season in the fall was faced
with uncertainty. Covid put another hold on the football season...yet again; and
WHEREAS with the mandate of vaccines and exemptions for a restart of the
season in the winter, the program took another hit as more players opted out of
participation. The junior varsity season was cancelled, leaving a small group of
young and motivated student athletes willing to take on the challenge - to play in only
its second year of Division 1 of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation; and
WHEREAS, with many new safety guidelines in place, this intrepid team went to
work. There was limited time to prepare for the first game of the season against the
reigning state champion Hilo Vikings; and
WHEREAS, on October 22, 2021, the Wildcats took the first step of the journey
with an overtime victory over the Vikings in a game that featured no fans at Julian
Yates Field, and finished the regular season with a perfect 4-0 record; and
WHEREAS, in a December 3, 2021, rematch with Hilo for the crown, the Wildcats
defeated the Vikings on a rainy night at Julian Yates field, 13-12. With monumental
plays made by the defense, the Wildcats secured their first Division 1 championship in
school history!
