WHEREAS Dr. Sandra Wood Scarr, born in Washington, D.C., earned her Ph.D. in
Psychology and Social Relations from Harvard University and was a commonwealth
Professor of Psychology emerita at the University of Virginia from 1983 to 1995. Sandra
also taught at Yale University, the University of Minnesota, and the University of
Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, as one of the most prominent people researching intelligence in the late
20th century, Sandra published in more than 200 articles and four books on intelligence,
childcare and family issues, and, in 1985, won the National Book Award of the American
Psychological Association for Mother Care/Other Care; and
WHEREAS Sandra served as a board member and CEO of KinderCare before
retiring to Hawai`i in 1997, and during retirement was active in the Kona Outdoor Circle,
Kona Coffee Council, Kona Coffee Farmers Association, and Kona Orchid Society, in
addition to serving on the Hawai`i County Water Board and the West Hawai`i Governor's
Council. In 2011, Sandra was appointed by Governor Neil Abercrombie to the Board of
Regents of the University of Hawai`i; and
WHEREAS, for more than a decade Sandra bred Labrador Retrievers and Standard
Poodles on her coffee farm in Holualoa, Hawai`i; and
WHEREAS Sandra Wood Scan, aged 85, of Holualoa, Hawai`i, passed away on
October 8, 2021, at Kona Community Hospital, and is survived by her children, Karen Scan,
Rebecca Scan, Stephanie Jackson, and Phillip Scan. A celebration of her life and legacy
will be held on January 30, 2022.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, MITCHELL D. ROTH, Mayor of the County of Hawai`i,
do hereby proclaim JANUARY 30, 2022, as
SANDRA WOOD SCARR DAY
in the County of Hawaii and call upon all citizens to recognize Sandra Wood Scarr's
tremendous contributions to our society as we celebrate her life and legacy.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused The Seal of the
County of Hawai`i to be affixed. Done this 30th of January 2022, in Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i.
