HomeMy WebLinkAboutNational Donate Life Month - April 2022Froclamatfon WHEREAS, observed in April each year, National Donate Life Month helps raise awareness about donation, encourage Americans to register as organ, eye and tissue donors and to honor those that have saved lives through the gift of donation, and WHEREAS members of the Hawai'i Coalition on Donation, including Blood Bank of Hawai'i, Hawai'i Bone Marrow Donor Registry, Hawai'i Donor Family Council, Hawai'i Lions Eye Bank and Makana Foundation, Hawai'i Living Donor Council, Legacy of Life Hawai'i, National Kidney Foundation of Hawai'i, Queen's Transplant Center at The Queen's Medical Center, Surgical Associates Inc., and many volunteers, are dedicated to promoting public awareness and increasing the number of organ, tissue, and eye donors in Hawai'i; and WHEREAS more than 350 people in Hawai'i are waiting for a life-saving liver, kidney, or pancreas transplant; and WHEREAS people of all ages are considered potential organ, eye and tissue donors, and each organ and tissue donor can save the lives of eight people, and restore sight and mobility for up to 75 more as an eye and tissue donor; and WHEREAS, education, legislative support, partnerships with local hospitals, media attention and visibility have helped to increase the number of organ donations and transplants in Hawai'i; and WHEREAS our aloha tradition of caring and compassion for others will help us to continue to increase the number of organ donors in Hawai`i, and bring hope to those who are waiting for a lifesaving transplant; and WHEREAS the gifts of life, sight and healing are truly the most generous and precious gifts one person can share with another. NOW, THEREFORE, I, MITCHELL D. ROTH, Mayor of the County of Hawai`i, do hereby proclaim April 2022, to be NATIONAL DONATE LIFE MONTH in the County of Hawai`i and encourage our citizens to be a part of this life- sustaining community by registering as an organ, eye, and tissue donor, as we honor the efforts and good works of those who make successful transplantation possible, especially the donors and their families. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused The Seal of the County of Hawai'i to be affixed. Done this 4th day of April 2022, in Hilo, Hawai'i.
