TO ALL PERSONNEL
FROM : DARREN J. ROSARIO, FIRE CHIEF
SUBJECT : HAWAI`I LIFE FLIGHT HELICOPTER LANDINGS
Hawai`i Fire Department (HFD) response requirements for Hawai`i Life Flight(HLF) Helicopter
landings are as follows:
For the Hilo Medical Center, Kona Community Hospital and North Hawai`i Community
Hospital secured Landing Zones (LZ); HLF landings will not require a response of an HFD
Apparatus. The transfer of patient and crew will continue to follow the existing PATIENT
TRANSFER POLICIES AND PROCEDURES. The HLF crew shall be responsible for the
loading and unloading of patients to and from the aircraft.
For the Critical Access Hospitals (CAH facilities) in Kohala, Pahala, Honoka`a; improvised
or Offsite LZ's may be required. Should an Offsite LZ be selected, the Hawai`i Life Flight—
Communication Center (HLF—CC) shall contact the FCC indicating the location of the LZ
and ETA of the HLF aircraft. The FCC shall then dispatch the appropriate HFD resources to;
secure the LZ, provide fire suppression support, as well as patient transport from the CAH
facility to the HLF helicopter(if needed). Radio communications shall be established
between the HFD apparatus and the HLF helicopter via our FIRE radio frequency and PL. If
FIRE radio communications are unavailable, communication via our FCC and HLF—CC
may be considered as an alternate means of relayed communications. The transfer of patient
and crew will continue to follow the existing PATIENT TRANSFER POLICIES AND
PROCEDURES. The HLF crew shall be responsible for the loading and unloading of patients
to and from the aircraft.
Hawai'i County is an Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer.
