WHEREAS, in 2012, President Barack Obama signed a presidential
proclamation, designating March 29`" as the annual observance of Vietnam War
Veterans Day and, on this day, Americans come together to commemorate the
service and sacrifices made by the nearly 3 million service members who served
in Vietnam; and
WHEREAS the Vietnam War is a story of service members from every
corner of our nation who left the warmth of family to serve the country they
loved; a story of patriots who braved the line of fire, who cast themselves into
harm's way, and who fought hour after hour, day after day to preserve the
liberties we hold dear; and
WHEREAS the proclamation states: "all were called to serve, none could
self-determine where they were stationed, and all were seen in the same way by
a country that could not separate the war from the warrior"; and
WHEREAS the proclamation continues: "In one of the war's most
profound tragedies, many of these men and women came home to be shunned
or neglected - to face treatment unbe fitting their courage and a welcome
unworthy of their example. We must never let this happen again."; and
WHEREAS our nation owes a great debt to those men, women, and family
members who sacrificed so much for our nation's freedom; and
WHEREAS we recognize the efforts of the National Society of the
Daughters of the American Revolution, Hawai`i Loa Chapter, and VFW Post 3830
in commemoration of the 50`" Anniversary of National Vietnam War Veterans
Day, A sunset service to be held at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Hilo,
Hawai`i, at 6 pm on March 29th.
NOW THEREFORE 1, MITCHELL D. ROTH, Mayor of the County of Hawai'i,
do hereby proclaim March 29, 2022, as
HAWAII COUNTY VIETNAM VETERANS DAY
in the County of Hawai`i and encourage our citizens to recognize and thank our
Vietnam Veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice during one of
America's longest wars.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused The Seal
of the County of Hawai'i to be affixed. Done this 29`" day of March 2022, in
Hilo, Hawai'i.
