HomeMy WebLinkAboutYachiyo (Janet) Hamada Day - 3.11.2022ir 0 ir Tt 0 F it,1-1 A WV 1 A7'rocianzation WHEREAS Yachiyo Yoshizawa, was born on March 11, 1922, in Kurtistown, Hawai`i, and was the eldest of seven children; and WHEREAS Yachiyo left school after her eighth-grade year to work and provide financial support for her family. As a result, her siblings were each able to complete their education and pursue their careers; and WHEREAS Yachiyo Yoshizawa, married Kenneth Teruo Hamada on October 20, 1945, at the Hongwanji Mission in Hilo, and her unselfish and determined nature guided her life while raising four proud children and successfully completing her work career, and WHEREAS Kenneth worked as a mechanic at various auto and construction companies in Hilo, Honolulu, and Kwajalein, and also owned a used car sales business. Yachiyo worked at Suisan, then as a fabric specialist at Ben Franklin Store, and as a sales consultant for Pola Cosmetics. After retiring, Yachiyo worked part time as a clerk at Farmer's Exchange and volunteered at the Hawai`i County Police Department, and WHEREAS health and exercise were central aspects of Yachiyo's life, she loved walking around the neighborhood, swimming at Four Miles and at "Sparky" Kawamoto Pool, playing gate ball with friends, and regularly mowing the lawn; and WHEREAS Yachiyo was an active member of the Hilo Hongwanji Mission Fujinkai, an avid Bon Dancer, and singer in the church choir, with pastimes including raising orchids and anthuriums, reading, and playing harmonica, ukulele, and card games. Yachiyo now resides at the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home, where she is adored by everyonel; and WHEREAS Yachiyo's accomplishments include an award for outstanding sales leadership in cosmetics, recognition for nearly thirty years of outstanding service at Ben Franklin Store, and an honor for her civic services as a volunteer for the County ofHawai'i; and, WHEREAS Yachiyo (Janet) Yoshizawa Hamada will celebrate her 100`" birthday on March 11, 2022, and shares these words of wisdom: 1) Take good care ofyourself so you can be of help to others; 2) Exercise and stay healthy; 3) Be thankful and be happy; and, 4) Live an honest life. NOW, THEREFORE, I, MITCHELL D. ROTH, Mayor of the County of Hawai`i, do hereby proclaim March 11,2022, as YACHIYO(JANET)HAMADA DAY in the County of Hawai'i and wish her good health, happiness and prosperity, and many more blessed years to come.
