In honor of Fair Housing month, the Office of Housing and Community Development, in partnership with Fair Housing Coordinators throughout the state, hosts an annual Fair Housing Seminar
during the month of April. This year’s virtual training was completed in April of 2021 and included 5 different sessions. Please see the information below for printable learning materials
and recorded training videos.
APRIL 1st - FAIR HOUSING 101
(Presented by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Hawaiʻi Civil Rights Commission)
This training session featured an introduction of County Fair Housing agencies; an overview of who is responsible for components of Fair Housing responses, and; dealing fairly and equally
difficult tenant and residents.

APRIL 8th - FAIR HOUSING IN THE TIMES OF COVID AND CAUTIONARY TALES FROM FAIR HOUSING EXPERTS
(Presented by the Legal Aid Society of Hawaiʻi and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development).
This session featured: an overview of Landlord-Tenant Code and also covered the existing national and Hawaii state Eviction Moratoriums, and dealing with Fair Housing and COVID-19.
This included a panel discussion of Fair Housing Attorneys/Experts: Nathan Aipa, Chris Branchart, Scott Chang and Sara Pratt.

APRIL 15th - RACE, COLOR, AND NATIONAL ORIGIN: FAIR HOUSING PROTECTIONS TRAINING, AND PANEL DISCUSSION: "Advancing Housing Equity for Native Hawaiians and Underserved Communities"
(Presented by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development)
This training session featured: an overview and highlights of Presidential Executive Orders relating to racism and housing discrimination, criminal records, language, and harassment.
This session also featured a panel discussion on the topic of "Advancing Housing Equity for Native Hawaiians and Underserved Communities". Panelists included speakers from: Legal Aid
Society of Hawaiʻi, Department of Hawaiian Homelands, Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement, and City and County of Honolulu, Department of Community Services.

This training session featured: an overview and highlights on topics of Sex, Gender Identity/Expression, Sexual Orientation, Familial Status, and Hānai Status. It also reviewed President
Biden's Executive Orders on Gender Expression, as well as disparate impacts and the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).
