Let Kauai be the example; now racing to solve an imminent landfill disaster with less than 5 years to critical capacity and overflow. There are many solutions available and a handful of companies in the know about a truly sustainable way forward. Unfortunately, procrastination— due to the sloth-like nature of government protocols— is winning out. Despite the huge land area on our island (of Hawaii) a pure landfill model cannot be sustained. Rapid breakdown of common materials, reconstruction of waste products, and chemically engineered synthetics from our waste can, not only make local waste management sustainable, but profitable. This funding opportunity can be an incentivised gateway for the innovation we need. Or even the financial push for many available technologies (E.g. synthetic fuel generation by pyrolysis and electrochemical means, raw battery materials production, sustainable recycled plastics production, etc.) to become a reality locally. A reality that I have witnessed to be deemed insignificant by the county in the past; in my five years on island I have tried to get involved several times in different capacities to no avail. It seems to me that the county feels that bringing on experts is not important. If the county has a good and unwavering collective of advisors and expert employees, why does it make poor decisions in the future of our island (and policy— not all bad of course)?
