Regular Meeting of the Pension Board
November 28, 2022

CALL TOORDER: The quarterly meeting of the Pension Board was called to order at 1:30 p.m. by
Chair Lucas.
ROLL CALL:
Present: Walter Lucas, Chair
Carol Ann Marumoto,Vice Chair
Guillerma"Irma" G. Sumera, Member
Joyce Unoki, Member
Absent & Excused: Deanna Sako, Finance Director, and Ex-Officio Treasurer
Also Present: Aaron Brown, Deputy County Clerk
Jon Henricks, County Clerk, and Ex-Officio Secretary
Diane Nakagawa, Deputy Finance Director
Kay Oshiro, Controller, Department of Finance
Elizabeth Strance, Corporation Counsel (via Zoom)
Linda Young, Payroll Specialist II, Department of Finance
Nicole Bello, Private Secretary, Office of the County Clerk
STATEMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC ON AGENDA ITEMS: (None.)
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: June 9, 2022
Vice Chair Marumoto moved to approve the minutes of June 9, 2022. Seconded by Ms. Sumera.
The motion to approve the minutes of June 9, 2022, was carried by the following vote:
AYES: Board Members Sumera, Unoki, Vice Chair Marumoto, and Chair Lucas—4.
NEW BUSINESS:
1e Election of Officers (December 2022—November 2023)
Chair Lucas proceeded with the Election of Officers and asked for nominations for Chair for the
upcoming year.
Vice Chair Marumoto made a motion to nominate Mr. Lucas as Chair of the Pension Board for
an additional year. Seconded by Ms. Sumera.
The motion for Mr. Lucas as Chair was carried by the following vote:
AYES: Board Members Sumera, Unoki, Vice Chair Marumoto, and Chair Lucas—4.

Chair Lucas asked for nominations for Vice Chair for the upcoming year.
Ms. Sumera made a motion to nominate Ms. Marumoto as Vice Chair for an additional year.
Seconded by Ms. Unoki.
The motion for Ms. Marumoto as Vice Chair was carried by the following vote:
AYES: Board Members Sumera, Unoki,Vice Chair Marumoto, and Chair Lucas—4.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
1. From the Accounts Division: Pensioner Statistics as of November 25, 2022.
Ms. Young circulated the Hawaii County Pensioners 2022 statistics and summarized:
a. As of November 25, 2022, there are 15 active pensioners.
b. Two deaths were reported in 2022, and one new pension was awarded.
Chair Lucas asked if there were any other announcements.
Mr. Henricks thanked Ms. Unoki for joining the Board and Ms. Sumera for her years of service. Mr.
Henricks also thanked Mr. Lucas for stepping up again into his leadership role, Ms. Marumoto for being
Mr. Lucas' partner, and he expressed his appreciation for the Board.
Mr. Lucas thanked all board members for serving. He expressed his appreciation for each member
individually and bid Ms. Sumera a fond farewell.
ADJOURNMENT:
Ms. Unoki made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Seconded by Vice Chair Marumoto.
The motion to adjourn was carried by the following vote:
AYES: Board Members Sumera, Unoki, Vice Chair Marumoto, and Chair Lucas—4.
The meting was adjourned at 1:37 pm.
