HomeMy WebLinkAboutHawaii Wing Civil Air Patrol Day - 12.3.2022COUNTY OF HAWAII lroc1amatIon WHEREAS, founded on December 1, 1941, the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) started as a group of volunteers led by civilian pilots who flew their own planes at their own expense to support America's efforts in World War II, primarily by flying reconnaissance missions near the country's coasts to protect cargo ships, especially vital oil tankers that were being sunk at an alarming rate; and WHEREAS, on July 1, 1946, President Harry Truman established CAP as a federally chartered nonprofit corporation, and on May 26, 1948, Congress designated CAP as the Air Force Auxiliary with three primary missions—emergency services, cadet programs, and aerospace education; and WHEREAS CAP carries out emergency service and disaster relief missions in the air and on the ground and has established itself among the nation's search and rescue elite; and WHEREAS the CAP youth program with more than 28,000 cadets offers leadership training, emergency services training, opportunities for flight and pilot training, and programs in STEM, rocketry, aeronautical, and aviation that focus on aerospace education; and WHEREAS the Hawai`i Wing Civil Air Patrol consists of over 600 cadets and adult members in 11 squadrons across the state, providing emergency services, search and rescue, disaster relief, humanitarian aid, support to the U.S. Air Force through light transport, communications support, and tsunami, hurricane, and tropical cyclone warnings; and WHEREAS the Hawai`i Wing Civil Air Patrol celebrated its 75th Anniversary this year having been formed on January 17, 1947, and on December 1, 2021, the Civil Air Patrol celebrates 81 years of performing missions for America, with today's adults and cadets performing their duties with the same vigilance as CAP's founding members. NOW THEREFORE, I, Mitchell D. Roth, Mayor of the County of Hawai'i, hereby proclaim December 3, 2022, as HA WAI I WING CIVIL AIR PATROL DAY in the County of Hawai'i and recognizes with gratitude the Hawai`i Wing Civil Air Patrol for 75 years of volunteer service to the State of Hawai`i.
