WHEREAS the U.S. Congress designated August 26 as Women's Equality Day in
1973, commemorating the 1920 certification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution,
granting women the right to vote; and
WHEREAS women in every state and every cultural and religious group--including
Hawaiian suffragists Wilhelmina Kekelaokalaninui Widemann Dowsett, Emma Kaili Metcalf
Beckley Nakuina, and others--worked to secure women's right to vote; and
WHEREAS today, Women's Equality Day celebrates the achievements of women's
rights activists and reminds us of the unique daily struggles that womenface and
the hurdles overcome by the heroic women who faced violence and discrimination to propel
the women's movement forward; and
WHEREAS despite many advances, women are not done fighting for equal rights,
women in the U.S. and around the world still face professional obstacles, domestic violence,
and other barriers to their well-being and success. The wage gap between men and women
still impacts women's economic power, and gender-based discrimination still plagues
workplaces and business transactions; and
WHEREAS Women's Equality Day is all about uplifting and empowering women,
and marveling at how far women have progressed, defying all odds and oppression. The
Hawai'i Loa Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is committed to
promoting and publicizing the importance of women's fullparticipation in civic life.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, MITCHELL D. ROTH, Mayor of the County ofHawai'i, do
hereby proclaim August 26, 2022, as
WOMEN'S EQUALITY DAY
in the County of Hawai'i and urge all citizens to brush up on women's history and learn
about the complicated and fascinating history of women's rights, show gratitude and do
something meaningful for the important women in your life, do your part to secure and
expand equal rights, and honor the sacrifices of the women's suffrage movement by
registering to vote.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused The Seal of the
