HomeMy WebLinkAbout10th Anniversary Hawaii Island LGBTQ Pride Month - Sealedfl FrocäzmatIon WHEREAS the County of Hawaii cherishes the value and dignity of each person and appreciates the importance of equality and freedom; and, WHEREAS the County of Hawai`i denounces prejudice and unfair discrimination based on age, gender identity, gender expression, race, color, religion, marital status, national origin, sexual orientation, or physical attributes as an affront to our fundamental principles; and, WHEREAS Pride Month began in June of 1969 on the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising in New York City, after a courageous group of citizens rose up and fought against the constant police harassment and discriminatory laws that have since been declared unconstitutional, setting in motion the birth of the modern gay and lesbian civil rights movement; and, WHEREAS on June 2, 2000, then President Bill Clinton declared June "Gay & Lesbian Pride Month" to commemorate the June 1969 Stonewall Uprising, and on June 1, 2009, then President Barack Obama expanded the commemoration further by declaring June to be "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month"; and, WHEREAS the County of Hawaii appreciates the cultural, civic, and economic contributions of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, Asexual/Ally+ (LGBTQIA+) community which strengthens our social welfare; and, WHEREAS Hawai`i County has a thriving LGBTQIA+ community, sustaining and sustained by so many welcoming organizations, places of worship, businesses, neighborhoods, schools, and events; and, WHEREAS this year marks the 10th Anniversary of Hawai`i Island LGBTQ PRIDE - and the return of the annual Pride Parade and Festival on June 25`" - celebrating the authenticity, love, diversity, and contributions of the Hawai`i Island LGBTQAI+ Community. NOW, THEREFORE, I, MITCHELL D. ROTH, Mayor of the County of Hawai'i, do hereby proclaim JUNE 2022 as, 10th ANNIVERSARY OF HAWAII ISLAND LGBTQ PRIDE MONTH in the County of Hawai'i and encourage all citizens to eliminate prejudice wherever it exists, actively promote the principles of equality, liberty, and justice, and to celebrate our diversity by taking part in community events throughout June which focus on and celebrate our LGBTQIA+ neighbors.
