Pohaha I Ka Lani’s has been volunteering to malama Waipi'o Valley Lookout PONC parcel since
2016. We continued to ensure the area to be a safe environment where malama 'aina opportunities,
cultural and educational programs was offered to the public. As in previous years, we heavily
received local and visiting youth groups who played a large role in caring for this 'aina.
We were able to host local and visiting youth groups who were able to learn: 1.traditional
farming techniques; 2. farming according to the moon phases; 3.how to do lashing to
make bamboo fencing; 4. learned chants/hula that focused on the area; 5. learned about
la'au lapa'au, plant identification and uses; 6. learned how to do airlayers and how to
grow certain plants by cuttings; and 7. the importance of taking one learns about
malama 'aina and implement those lessons to where individuals come from. All of these
lessons benefited both the participant and the 'aina.
Theft has been a big issue on the island and at the Waipi'o Valley Lookout PONC site, we are constantly
dealing with theft. Prior, we were not allowed to have any type of structure to place our tools, tents, tables
and chairs in. With this, we would place items in different areas on the property only to come back and
find items were stolen. Because the parcel is viewed as a public space, the produce that local school
children have planted were also stolen. When we ask people why they are stealing the items from the
parcel, one of the responses we received was, it is their tax paying money covering the costs for our
group to get paid. People are under the impression that we are getting paid for all the work we are doing
to care for the parcel. They have a hard time understanding that according to County of Hawai'i's rule, we
can't get paid for the labor we are doing. The hours of hard, physical labor is long, in the hot sun, without
no water to wash up with and needing to cover a bulk of the expenses. We are working on our 7th year of
educating thousands while caring for the land as volunteers.
We will contine teaming up with schools such as Honoka'a High School, HAAS PCS,
UHH, HCC, HPU to offer on-going opportunities for students to come and learn while
helping to tend to the 'aina. We will continue to host residents from different parts of the
island and visitors to offer opportunities to hear mo'olelo, history, learn, and help with our
malama 'aina efforts. We plan to put up small sections with fencing to help better protect
plants from pigs.
