To Whom It May Concern:
This letter is in support of Kona Aerials receiving a special use permit to continue
operating the gymnastics gym in Kailua-Kona, Hawai’i. In 2014 I moved to Kailua-Kona,
Hawai’i and began working for the State of Hawai’i Department of Human Services Child
Welfare Services in Kona as an investigator and eventually was promoted to a supervisory
position. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the State of Hawai’i. I moved here from a
small community in Illinois. Like that community I noticed the lack of resources and
recreational options and opportunities for our keiki. Kona Aerial gymnastics was one of the few
options for children. Since 2014, I have left Child Welfare Services to pursue a career as an
attorney to serve as a GAL for our keiki here in Kailua-Kona.
Ms. Nanette Guiffrida was provided an opportunity to build a gymnastics gym the likes
of which Kona has never seen. Unbeknownst to her there are some issues with regarding zoning
and her ability to continue to fulfil her lifelong dream of providing the keiki of our community
with a safe, drug free, positive space they can exercise, gain pride and confidence, and further
learn how to be productive members of our Kona ohana. Ms. Guiffrida is not trying to
circumvent the law or find a “work around.” She is a small business owner within the Kona
community who is asking for the opportunity to continue to make our community a better a place
and provide our keiki with something positive. By allowing her the special use permit, the
commission will be providing opportunities for our keiki to continue to grow, succeed, and learn
to achieve their dreams.
Kona Aerials is an important business here in Kona and Ms. Guiffrida is an important
business owner and part of our Kona ohana. Please allow her the opportunity to continue her
dream of providing our keiki a positive, safe space so they can learn to pursue their dreams.
Sincerely,
Krista D. Walker, LCSW
