Re: Kona Aerial Special Use Permit#21-000227
Dear Leeward Planning Commission,
We write this letter in regards to the current Kona Aerials Special Use Permit
#21-000227 and its location.
Our eldest daughter has been a gymnast at Kona Aerials since 2018 and it has
been an anchor in her everyday life. We find that gymnastics is a great
sporting option for young women, as it gives them a sport that they can
participate in all year round.. It has helped her with her physical fitness,
confidence, life lessons, and discipline. Our daughter has traveled off island
for competitions over the years with her teammates which creates great
bonding experiences. When a gymnast gets to compete at a higher level, they
also get the opportunity to travel to the mainland. A college visit is usually in
the itinerary if the competition is in a college town. A few of these gymnasts at
Kona Aerials may have a legitimate chance of obtaining an athletic scholarship
to compete in gymastics. A shut down of Kona Aerials will greatly decrease the
chance for these few gymnasts to get those scholarships as they need to train
year round just to keep up conditioning and skills.
Growing up on The Big Island, we had very few opportunities, limited sports
choices, and little extracurricular activities. This sport and organization has
given our daughter this positive experience to broaden her interests.
As for the gym's current location, it's hard to find a place and or building that
meets the requirements for an actual training gymnastics facility. To find an
open air or air conditioned building with a 32 foot high ceiling that is big
enough to fit all the gymnastics equipment is tough in Kona.
It will be a great loss for the Kona community if Kona Aerials has to close its
doors. Those doors have been open and serving the community for over 30
years to many families.
Sincerely,
Preston and Denise Bailado
