My name is Claire Cea and I am the office manager for Mr. K's Recycle & Redemption Center
Inc. We collect HI5 beverage containers, non-ferrous scrap metal, solar panels, electronic
waste, rims, radiators, batteries and catalytic converters to be recycled. For a long time, Mr.
K's has been urging the county to place a ban on e-waste from going into the landfill because
of the harms of hazardous materials being leached into the ground. If e-waste does go into the
landfill there is also the risk of fires and/or explosions from lithium ion batteries which are
prevalent in electronics nowadays. We firmly believe that electronics, as well as the other
materials that can be properly recycled should not enter the waste stream and end up in our
landfills.
I am writing in support of the EMC assisting DEM and the county council in drafting an
ordinance that would require recyclable materials be diverted from landfilling, but do not
support incineration as an acceptable alternative to landfilling, as it is worse for human health
and the environment than landfilling waste and is not in alignment with a zero waste
philosophy.
