Dear DEM Commissioners, Mayor Roth and County Council members, According to DOH Solid and Hazardous Waste Branch, the Kona landfill will last for another 50 years and an alternative new site is not required to be identified until year 40 (10 years before filled to capacity). Let’s not go hog wild with claims we should completely upset the status quo that is actually working to divert recyclables. Individuals as well as companies work hard to divert and recycle cans and bottles found in public trash cans now, and the can and bottle collector’s personal budget/livelihood depends on the small income they receive. It would be immoral to take away this livelihood that is the only job available to many of these folks who sort, collect, and deliver cans and bottles to recycling companies like Mr. K’s. Please download and view the attached video I took last week in Liliokulani Gardens as living proof of the current system that works (regarding cans and bottles in public trash cans) and should escape change.
