Opticos is a team of urban designers, architects, and
strategists that partners with clients who want to lead the way in
providing vibrant, diverse, walkable urban places. Because we approach
each project with innovation and creative problem solving in mind,we
function just as much as a think tank as a consulting firm.
To us, architecture and planning must play a role in defining more sustainable, equitable,
healthy, compact patterns of development that improve the quality of life for everyone.
This starts with revitalizing existing urban places, but also must include the transformation
of suburban places into more urban ones and the creation of thoughtful, new walkable
urban communities.

Adapting Smart Growth Principles to Small Towns
Reference
Josh Meyer,Community Design Program Smart Growth doesn't just help cities to flourish—some of our most important
Director urban planning work has been done in small towns and rural areas. In place of
Local Government Commission dusty residential streets with no sidewalks,we've created tree-lined avenues9809thStreet,suite 170o along which people can bike, walk,or play.Where boarded-up buildings usedSacramento,CA 95814
916.448.1198 x 310 to stand,we've envisioned main streets where people can shop, eat, and play,
jmeyer@lgc.org and we've turned a former lumberyard into a mixed-use district with shade
Project:Miscellaneous projects with the trees over bicycle trails and attractive affordable apartments. In California's
Local Government Commission Central Valley alone we've been involved in 22 projects in communities with
populations ranging from 1,400 to 50,000.Throughout all of these projects,
we've worked with residents to design stronger, smarter, and more sustainable
communities that truly address their needs.
Rural areas can be just as healthy and well planned as urban areas and people
in small towns should have the same access to beautiful public spaces and
the same opportunities for walkable, livable neighborhoods as people in large
cities. We don't see the size of these places as impediments. Instead,we
believe that these projects will create a vision for these communities as thriving
places that are"small enough"to be successful.
We carry National Charrette Institute Certification and bring years of experience
in customizing outreach strategies and techniques for individual communities.
We are accustomed to working in diverse communities and have facilitated
multiple community charrette activities, acting both as a primary facilitator and
supporter to other public facilitation consultants.

Certified As a group of like-minded designers looking to make an impact in the world,we strive
to integrate social, environmental, and economic responsibility into all that we do.
B Professionally,we're one of the first B Corporations and a founding California Benefit

What is a B Corporation?
All B Corporations(B Corp) must meet standards for social and environmental
performance, and create benefits for all stakeholders, rather than just shareholders.
To maintain its B Corp certification, the company must pass a rigorous assessment
administered by the nonprofit B Lab every two years. As a B Corporation,we enjoy
being in the company of prominent and groundbreaking companies, including Seventh

practices and techniques through university courses, the FBCI training program, webinars

reviews to citywide zoning code updates, citywide corridor networks, multi-jurisdictional
countywide applications, the creation of the first development code for a rapidly
growing international city, and the integration of form-based bridges between FBCs and

Informing Future Zoning/Standards: Getting Beyond Simply Increasing Density

Testing Design Alternatives, Ecomic Feasibility and Building Support for the Right Development on

What?Testing feasibility and desirablity(from
