About The Program
V-PAL is a school-to-school language
exchange program between Hawai'i County
and Hawai'i County Sister City schools in Japan,
Philippines, Korea and Chile.
Designed for middle and high school students,
the program aims to provide participants with
opportunities to learn a new language or
practice talking with native speakers of the
language they are learning in a relaxed,
informal, and supportive environment. It is also
an opportunity to make new friends from
abroad and learn about each country's culture.
This online program is non-academic, and
participation is voluntary. Participants meet
once a month and discussion topics are
decided by the students themselves. Teachers
and other volunteers help facilitate the
discussion.
V-PAL participants are responsible for good behavior
throughout the program. Always use a computer in a
way that shows consideration and respect. It is not
acceptable to use obscene, profane, threatening, or
disrespectful language.
V-PAL participants must demonstrate awareness of,
sensitivity to, and respect for other participants
values, beliefs, viewpoints, systems, and culture.
V-PAL participants must follow all other virtual
learning student code of conduct from their
respective schools.
The V-PAL program is committed to providing a safe,
productive, welcoming environment for all participants.
All participants including students, teachers, facilitators
and all others are expected to abide by this Virtual
