CALL TO ORDER – Patricia Nye, Committee Chair called the meeting to order at 10:05 a.m. 2. STATEMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC – Please note that public testimony can be done in the beginning or when the agenda item(s) is called. - None. 4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF THE JUNE 24, 2022 MEETING – Patricia Nye, Committee Chair motion to approve the Minutes of the meeting. Motion to accept the minutes by Judy Bell, and seconded by Chalintorn Burian. Unanimously approved. An Area Agency on Aging Hawai`i County is an equal opportunity provider and employer. ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON AGING MINUTES Friday, August 26, 2022, 10:00 A.M. Page 2 5. COMMENTS FROM THE COMMITTEE CHAIR – Patricia Nye Scam calls – Federal Government helped to combat ROBO calls. However, now the scammers have gone to text messaging. There is no way to trace where it is coming from. 6. EXECUTIVE ON AGING REPORT AND UPDATES – Horace Farr 1. Attended the National USAging Conference and Tradeshow held in Austin, Texas in July. USAging is the national association representing and supporting the network of Area Agencies on Aging (AAA) and advocating for the Title VI Native American Aging Programs. This year’s conference was the first in person conference since 2019 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The conference was attended by over 1000 individuals from all 50 states, Guam, American Samoa, and Puerto Rico. The three day conference theme “Creating an Inclusive Culture”, how to create access and equity across health disparity barriers. Income, ethnicity, education, age, and gender are health disparity preventable circumstances. The removal of health disparity barriers that prevent “Equal Access and Equity”, will be the focal foundation for all value- based care programs. 2. Staffing – Administrative Services Assistant I, and the Database Analyst positions are vacant. 3. Onsite visit to Kau, and South Kona Districts. Access to services, 1. Size – Kau: 922 sq. mi, S. Kona: 335.4 sq. mi. Total: 1,257.4 sq. mi. (Sites visited: Pahala, Naalehu, Hawaiian Ocean View Estates (HOVE), Milolii, and Honaunau.) 7. STATE POLICY ADVISORY BOARD FOR ELDERLY AFFAIRS (PABEA) – Shelly Ogata – PABEA updates: At the last PABEA meeting there was a strategic planning meeting and notes will be forthcoming. There were a few areas that were identified for prioritization. State Plan – Surveys: Horace mentioned the completed surveys can be sent to the Hawaiʻi County Office of Aging in Hilo, and we can get it to the State. 8. Page 3 Also, it can be dropped off at the senior center sites, and they will bring it in to our office. In addition, they can call us, and we can make arrangements to pick them up and forward all to the State. There are many that do not have access to a computer or know how to use a computer to complete the survey online. Those individuals are encouraged to complete a paper survey. Focus on affordable housing: There was a presentation from an affordable kupuna housing project in Manoa that is trying to build and it’s getting lots of push back from the community. It is a really great affordable rental opportunity for kupuna. Horace mentioned the part that makes it affordable is all of the infrastructure – road, sewer, water – is already there. This is a major cost savings for the developer. Chalintorn Burian (AARP) – Hilo Shred Event and Food Drive, Saturday, September 10, 2022 from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.; AARP Scam and Fraud Prevention; and lawmakers and Governor Ige passed and signed the Hawaii Retirement Savings Law Act into law. New benefits for workers, small businesses and taxpayers. 9. SCHEDULING OF NEXT MEETING: Patricia Nye, Committee Chair to announce next meeting, (Tentative) Friday, December 16, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. 10. ADJOURNMENT Patricia Nye move to adjourn the meeting; motioned; Judy Bell motioned, seconded by Chalintorn Burian.
