CALL TO ORDER – Patricia Nye, Committee Chair called the meeting to order at 10:03 a.m. 2. INTRODUCTIONS Horace introduced Suzanna Tiapula, Corporation Counsel Committee Members Present: Patricia Nye, Clyde Silva, Judy Bell, Marsha Okajima, Lisa McNamarra, Chalintorn Burian, Laenette Longakit, Jacqueline Honda Committee Members Excused: Enola Kaneta, Michelle Johnson Ex-Officio Excused: Shelly Ogata, PABEA 3. STATEMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC – Please note that public testimony can be done in the beginning or when the agenda item(s) is called. 4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF THE AUGUST 26, 2022 MEETING – Patricia Nye, Committee Chair. Motion to approve the Minutes of the meeting. Motion to accept the minutes by Laenette Longakit, and seconded by Chalintorn Burian. Unanimously approved. An Area Agency on Aging Hawai`i County is an equal opportunity provider and employer. COMMENTS FROM THE COMMITTEE CHAIR – Patricia Nye, Committee Chair Pat mentioned continue to receive scam phone calls. Announced that she is resigning as Committee Chair effective February 24, 2023. Horace mentioned the committee to elect Committee Chair in the next meeting, and asked Clyde Silva, Committee Vice Chair to conduct the next meeting. Clyde Silva agreed. 6. EXECUTIVE ON AGING REPORT AND UPDATES – Horace Farr Executive on Aging updated the COA on the status of the Administrative Services Assistant I (ASA I) position. We interviewed four potential candidates on December 8, 2022, and are anticipating to have the ASA I onboard beginning January 16, 2023. We will now focus on filling the Data Analyst position. Executive on Aging reported on the budget process and that the first budget meeting with the Finance Department would be this afternoon at 2:00 p.m. We were very fortunate to have assistance from an accountant from another department assist in helping us prepare our budget. Executive on Aging reported on the December 13, 2022, and December 15, 2022, AARP meetings in Hilo and Kona that he was invited to speak at. Executive shared with the members that the Big Island is truly a BIG Island. The U.S. Census classifies Hawaiʻi County as ⅔ (two-third) rural with two urban centers. In planning for retirement and where one would like to spend their retirement, besides finances, one needs to consider the availability of services and access to them. Executive on Aging reported that workforce development would be a high priority in the upcoming legislative session. Committee members who are interested in the process, were encouraged to submit testimony or contact their legislator as a constituent. The office will submit to the committee the five bills that made it into the Kupuna Caucus package. Also, we will be sharing other bills of interest that may have impact to our Kupuna. Chalintorn Burian, AARP, mentioned broadband and they did a study to see what is available for the kupunas, and if they are interested. It was ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON AGING MEETING MINUTES Friday, December 16, 2022, 10:00 A.M. Page 5 asked earlier what AARP are doing. AARP has a listening session to look at what are the priorities for the coming year. When January legislative session opens, we need to prioritize what issues need to address with such as transportation around the island, medical services. Nationwide, Medicare will deal directly with pharmaceutical to get better prices on drugs for seniors. AARP is also interested in Livable Communities for aging in place. AARP will be talking to Hawaii Island Adult Care. 8. SCHEDULING OF NEXT MEETING: Patricia Nye, Committee Chair announced next meeting - Friday, February 24, 2023. 9. ADJOURNMENT Patricia Nye move to adjourn the meeting; Laenette Longakit motioned; seconded by Clyde Silva.
