I wanted to write and let you know that my family is opposed to the proposed development in
punalu'u as it is currently being presented. I have had many people discuss this with me, all
Ka'u residents, and at this point nobody wants it to happen. This is the first issue I have with it.
Something of this magnitude should not be forced upon a local population against their will.
My second issue is that there is no current Environmental Impact statement. And the impact
would seem, to me, to be potentially very significant. With breeding turtles, rare bird species,
and one of the last remaining natural coastal areas in the state, I would think those responsible
for its protection would want to use a little more caution than this state's government has
historically demonstrated.
I'm also told there is already an issue with water in the area... nothing has been done to address
this. The potential for fire danger would seem to be a cause for concern among residents and
native wildlife.
We are counting on you to do the pono thing for all of us. Protect this precious piece of
unadulterated aina. If you do not, there is no going back.
