Aloha,
I am writing to you to share why I believe the SMA needed for the Punalu'u development
should be approved. For decades our people have been driving to Hilo and Kona for work.
This has caused extreme challenges and health complications among our people. This has also
caused our children to raise themselves because their parents are in Kona or Hilo working.
Creating this development plan at Punaluu is going to bring many jobs to the local community
and that will help keep our children in Ka'u and keep our families, healthy and happy. This
will help our families contribute to the community on a daily basis instead of contributing to
the communities in Hilo and Kona because that's what they have to do. For example, their
kids can't play sports because they don't have a ride. If their parents worked in town they
could participate in community events. This helps our children and families grow.
I ask that you approve this SMA and approve this development so that our people can have
jobs in the local community and our local community can thrive. This development will
protect the coastline and will protect the local families access to the coastline. Thank you for
your time.
