Dear Members of the Windward Planning Commission and the County of Hawai'i,
I am writing to formally submit my testimony opposing the development of Punalu'u in Ka'u
on the island of Hawaii. As a concerned citizen and advocate for environmental, cultural,
historical preservation, I strongly believe that permitting such development would have
detrimental effects on the natural landscape, cultural heritage, and overall well-being of the
community.
First and foremost, the proposed development threatens the fragile ecosystem of Punalu'u.
This area is home to diverse flora and fauna, some of which are endangered or endemic
species. Introducing large-scale development would disrupt their habitats, leading to
irreversible damage to the local biodiversity. Furthermore, construction activities, including
deforestation and land grading, would contribute to soil erosion and water pollution, further
endangering the delicate balance of the ecosystem.
In addition to its ecological significance, Punalu'u holds great cultural importance to the
Hawaiian community. It is a place of historical significance, with sacred sites and ancestral
ties deeply rooted in the land. Allowing commercial development in this area would desecrate
these sacred sites and disrespect the cultural heritage of the indigenous people of Hawaii. It is
imperative that we honor and preserve these cultural treasures for future generations to
appreciate and learn from.
Furthermore, the proposed development raises concerns about its impact on the local
infrastructure and quality of life for residents. Punalu'u is a remote area with limited resources
and infrastructure. Introducing a large-scale development would put undue strain on existing
utilities, transportation systems, and emergency services. Moreover, increased traffic and noise
pollution would disrupt the tranquility of the community and diminish the overall quality of
life for residents.
In conclusion, I urge the Windward Planning Commission to reject the development proposal
for Punalu'u in Ka'u. Instead, I encourage you to explore alternative solutions that prioritize
environmental conservation, cultural preservation, and community well-being. It is our
responsibility to act as stewards of the land and protect these precious resources for current
and future generations. Thank you for considering my testimony on this important matter.
Sincerely,
Katherine Kitchen
