Subject: RE: Black Sand Beach LLC Application for an SMA
Date: Wednesday,March 6,2024 1:07:43 PM
Aloha nui Commissioners,
I first mahalo each of you for taking on this kuleana. I know that this is on your personal time,
and that you are not compensated for your time
at the Planning Commission meetings, nor for your time to prepare for the Planning
Commission
meetings. I am grateful to you for your service.
Secondly, I mahalo you folks for your time and consideration of this testimony that I have
prepared
and submitted for your review. I submit testimony today as a non native, but a supporter of
keeping what's left of the rural country style we love about Hawaii and the big island.
Punalu'u is the most accessible, natural and untouched beach left on that island..."country" is
why we love to visit this island and area, country is what we are retrieving to when we are
leaving our homelands/residing states. with your constant development, there will be no
reason to visit your island and sooner or later your Island will end up like the California coast,
or Hilo! Places that used to be a big tourist attraction/destination, but no so anymore! I urge
you to NOT grant an SMA permit for the development of a resort or any building at Punalu'u
& Wailau, but also to stop any future buildings from coming up. Please take care of what you
have now, make sure the natives are taken care of, so that we (visitors, tourists and rental
owners) can feel the aloha when we arrive, which is slowly, but surely dying and making your
island less desirable. As an African-American, I am currently seeking to travel to the
many coast in Africa, because my last few visits there were so sad. I'm sure I'll see 90%
Africans in Africa. It's bad enough there's not enough natives in most areas, but Hawaii is the
last place I ever wanna see loose its "country, rural style" and it's aloha native vibes. Your
decision will have huge and long-lasting impacts on the people of Ka`u, the lineal and cultural
descendants of Wailau and Punalu'u, and most importantly the pristine `aina which is the
subject
of this application.
I am hopeful that this testimony, and the others you receive, will compel you to see the
situation as
I do, and to vote against granting an SMA permit. Therefore, I ask that you vote `a`ole to
granting this
permit.
Mahalo,
Timmisha Pettiford
