Aloha Chairman Lin,
My wife and I have been deeply connected to Hawaii since 1985, cherishing both its natural
beauty and the community spirit. We currently reside in a home that offers a unique studio
space, perfectly suited for visitors celebrating special occasions. Over the past 2 1/2 years,
we have honed our skills as hosts, providing memorable experiences to guests from across
the globe. This endeavor, while enriching in cultural exchange, also plays a crucial role in
our financial stability.
The proposed limitations on short-term vacation rentals, as outlined in Hawaii Bill 121, have
raised significant concerns for us. Our studio, lacking a full kitchen, is not suitable for long-
term occupancy but has thrived in the short-term rental market. The income generated
from this venture is indispensable to our budget.
We understand the challenges posed by remote and irresponsible hosts. However, we
believe that the broad restrictions proposed may not be the most effective solution.
Instead, we urge the Planning Commission to consider alternatives that address these
concerns without unduly impacting responsible hosts like ourselves.
Our requests of the Planning Commission include:
Recommending the continuation of defining short-term as under 30 days.
Recommending streamlining the registration process and eliminating invasive
requirements.
Recommending the removal of any rules or regulations that already exist in law, such as
quiet hours and parking requirements.
We are committed to upholding the aloha spirit and ensuring our guests leave with a
deeper appreciation for Hawaii. We hope for a solution that recognizes the positive
contributions of responsible hosts and preserves the unique experiences we offer.
Mahalo for considering our perspective.
Me ka mahalo nui,
Kurt A. Keesling
