HomeMy WebLinkAboutWORLD TOUR HiYC Meeting (1)Hawaiʻi State Youth Commission HiYC Meeting Commission Introduction Cabinet Members Members Purpose and Mission Purpose: Advise the governor and legislature on the effects of legislative policies, needs, assessments, priorities, programs, and budgets concerning the youth of the State. Mission: The Hawai‘i State Youth Commission is a constellation of youth, connected to our past and mindful of our future, who engage in public-policy advocacy through a commitment to inclusivity, opportunity, and progress in Hawai‘i. Objectives ●Respond to requests for comment and recommendation on matters referred to it by the governor or legislature ●Conduct research and community outreach regarding the needs of the youth of Hawai`i ●Make recommendations addressing the concerns and needs of the youth of Hawai`i ●Report to the governor and legislature the activities, goals, and accomplishments of the commission by July 1 of each calendar year Meetings Regular Meetings: Every Sunday at 11am-12pm HST Typical Agenda: -Approval of minutes -Committee -Legislative -Social Media/Communication New Business Projects: 1)School Supply Drive 2022 2)SDRH Water Fundraiser 3)Voter Registration Drive 4)Youth Voter Guide 5)Camp/Retreat New Business Legislative Team Updates 1)Legislative Lead Update 2)Housing Update 3)Environmental Team Update 4)Education Team Update Current Bills EDUCATION ENVIRONMENT HOUSING -SB665 - Requires each DoE classroom to be equipped with an opioid antagonist. Requires the Department of Education to train employee…. Appropriates moneys. -HB 1528 - Hawaii constitutional amendment for the right to a clean environment -SB2779 - Requires the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands to build sufficient rental housing, including rental apartment units, and rent-with-option-to-buy housing units, to satisfy the housing needs of native Hawaiians on the waitlist for homestead leases. Current Bills PUBLIC HEALTH HB1778 / SB2691 -Prohibits the sale of flavored tobacco products and mislabeled e-liquid products that contain nicotine. Repeals language making the sale of cigarettes, tobacco products, and electronic smoking devices a statewide concern and preempting county ordinances and regulations. Effective 1/1/2025.
