I'm writing to share my thoughts on Bill 121 regarding TAR and hosting platforms. I
oppose the Bill 121 for various reasons. I'm a REALTORO with the Hawaii Island
REALTORSO board. I'm also a home owner and a host of my own short-term
rental. I'm all about real estate and I've got some real concerns about this bill:
- **Private Property Rights:** We should have the freedom to use our homes for
living, renting, or hosting, without the county dictating the who, how long, and
how many.
- **Clash with State Law:** The bill's changing the game on how long we can rent
out places, from 30 to 180 days. It's not only complicated, but it doesn't sit right
with state laws and feels like it's taking away homeowners' rights.
- **Housing Security:** This bill is trying to protect housing, but by doing so, it's
kind of leaving out a bunch of other housing needs because it's only focusing on
specific groups.
- **Steep Penalties:** The fines and fees here are just too much. We're talking
about a $10,000 hit for breaking the rules, which feels way over the top.
Just wanted to lay it all out there and see what we can do to keep our property
rights in check and make sure any rules are fair and square for everyone.
Thank you for reading.
