Subject: Public testimony for March 7 Council Meeting: SMA APPLICANT: BLACK SAND BEACH LLC(PL-SMA-2023-000046)
Date: Thursday, March 7,2024 10:28:11 AM
I attended by Zoom this morning.
It was very important to me to offer testimony.
My hand was up, but I could not unmute myself.
The meeting Zoom rep said she would email me, but I never received an email.
So here is my public testimony. Please submit it during the proceedings for me.
Mahalo.
Housing affordability is a great issue on our island.
Most residents of the kau district cannot afford homes outside the Kau district.
This development most certainly would raise prices beyond the means of local residents.
Must our current Kau residents—people just trying to live in a family home--be denied the
chance to own a home, or actually have to leave their home because of high taxes, so that a
wealthy resort developer can make more money?
When this happened in Vancouver with aggressive international development, house prices went up
three times in one year, in 2o16.
They currently remain over two times higherthan any other city in Canada.
The entire real estate market in Vancouver has been wrenched since aggressive Asian foreign
investment entered the area, and it became quite a problem with money laundering and organized
crime.
The same thing happened in Australia with aggressive Asian investment.
We must protect ourselves. Please protect the people of this island.
