From: Helen kapela
To: WPCtestimony; Kern.Zendo
Subject: Testimony in Support
Date: Friday, March 29,2024 1:35:15 PM
Aloha, Windward Planning Commissioners,
I was like everyone else concerned about the development of the area, but after
reviewing the plans and discussing with Ms. Liu and her team, I feel reassured that
they are taking the necessary precautions to preserve the natural beauty and cultural
significance of Punalu'u.
Furthermore, I appreciate the focus on low-density development, which will help maintain
the rural character of the area while still allowing for responsible growth. It's crucial that
any development in our community respects the environment and the heritage that we
hold dear.
The fact that there will be a shoreline management plan in place is particularly reassuring.
Our shoreline is a precious resource that must be protected, not only for its ecological
importance but also for its cultural and recreational value. With proper management, we
can ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy our beaches and marine life.
Regarding concerns about the turtles, I share the sentiment that they must be
safeguarded. Knowing that they are federally protected and that measures will be in place
to protect them within the shoreline management plan is a relief. It's essential that we
coexist harmoniously with the wildlife that inhabits our shores.
Overall, I am in support of the plans laid out for the Punalu'u area. I believe they strike a
balance between development and preservation, ensuring that our community can thrive
while also protecting the natural and cultural treasures that make this place so special.
Thank you for considering my input.
Sincerely,
Helen Kapela
