Aloha...
My name is Kyra Chun and I was born and raised in Pahala, Hawaii. Punalu'u was/is the
home to many generations of family on my mother's side. My two grandfathers were
respected fishermen of that bay and both of my grandmother's made/make a living through the
lei stand located there.
I am writing to voice the opposition of granting approval for Black Sand Beach LLC's request
for a special management area permit.
I strongly believe their plan of action will not benefit the current residents at this time.
Problems within the area,whether created during the time of previous land owners or not,
have not been addressed/resolved yet by the current owners. Safety for the area,
residents/visitors has not been a priority.
Punalu'u is widely known for being a nesting ground and daily habitat for the
ENDANGERED Green Sea Turtle. I demand a new Environmental Impact Study be done to
protect this area from unnecessary development. We're already losing the battle of the
Rhinoceros Beetle devastating our palm trees.
Like other areas (Waikoloa, Four Seasons, etc) in Hawaii, I do see the benefits of development
(job opportunities, etc), however I strongly believe that those benefits for the people of Ka'u
will NOT come with doing business with Black Sand Beach LLC.
