My apologies for submitting this testimony after the deadline, but I only learned of the hearing
the evening before. I hope it will still be considered.
Chad Lin, Vice Chair Daniele, and member of the Winward Planning Commission,
I urge the commission not approve this residential and commercial community
development consisting of approximately 225 residential and short stay units, village and
wellness center, retail uses, rehabilitation and use of golf courses. This project is an example
of everything that is going wrong in Hawai`i with short term rentals pushing out and raising
costs for residents.
Ka'u is one of the last remaining untouched places in Hawaii. An example, I imagine, of old
Hawai`i. Ka'u has a very dry climate and can not support the increased water demands of a
golf course, and increased temporary population of tourists. The area also does not have a
waste water treatment solution and additional development will exacerbate this problem and
further contaminate the ocean. There are plenty of exiting resorts on the island for tourist to
enjoy. This place sees enough tourism as it is, which impacts endangered wildlife. This project
will only benefit the developer and harm local residents.
