Aloha,
The community has spoken and we demand an EIS. After colonization and so much has been
taken from Native Hawaiians, the audacity to develop on one of Hawaii's most rural and
sacred places is out of touch. The planning department must listen to the community, and
complete an EIS on this delicate ecosystem. If you go to Punalu'u any day of the week, you'll
find it at capacity with tourists. With so many places taken from Native Hawaiians, please
leave this place to be cherished for generations to come. We do not need another foreign
investor pretending to know what is best for the Hawaiian people. With the maximum number
of tourists daily, heiau, iwi kupuna, and endangered animals, an EIS must be done to update
the current state of this wahi mana. The proposed development is also in a flood and tsunami
zone, which has already ended badly in the past. There are not enough resources to handle this
type of development in our rural district. After reading the planning department's
recommendation of approval, a resort does not"improve" a place. If you want"jobs" for Ka'u,
we would like more support with agricultural careers and farms, not serving the rich. The
repercussions of this development will ripple through Ka'u and change this place forever. We
demand an EIS and to listen to the overwhelming response from community members.
Mahalo,
