Subject: Advocating for the Support and Growth of Short-Term Vacation Rentals in Hawai"i

Chairman Dennis Lin
Windward Planning Commission
County of Hawaii

Unit 1502

Aloha Chairman Lin,
I am writing to express my strong support for the continued growth and support of short-
term vacation rentals on the Big Island of Hawaii. As a resident deeply invested in our
community's well-being, I believe it's crucial to recognize the multifaceted benefits that the
vacation rental industry brings, especially in terms ofjob creation and economic stability.
One of the most significant contributions of the short-term vacation rental industry is the
creation of vital employment opportunities for local residents. Housekeeping, landscaping,
and property management companies play indispensable roles in maintaining the quality
and appeal of vacation rental properties. Thesejobs are essential for our community,
providing stable employment for many.
Moreover, for homeowners who choose to rent out their properties, vacation rentals serve
as a crucial source of supplemental income. This income is especially important for those
who have planned their retirement around the expected income from renting their primary
residences.
However, it's essential to acknowledge that Hawaii is already experiencing a decline in
income tax revenue as residents leave the state in search of better economic opportunities.
By bolstering income opportunities through initiatives like short-term vacation rentals, we
can mitigate this trend and ensure the continued prosperity of our communities.
Therefore, I kindly request the Planning Commission to consider the following
recommendations to support the growth of the short-term vacation rental industry:
Recommend streamlining the registration process and eliminating invasive requirements
like dimensioned drawings and the disclosure of private details of their home.
Recommend removing dangerous signage requirements and protect operators from the
public disclosure of addresses and ownership.
Recommend removing intrusive reporting requirements.
These recommendations aim to support the vacation rental industry while ensuring that
our community remains a vibrant and welcoming place for both residents and visitors.
Mahalo for considering my perspective on this matter.
Sincerely,
Jeffery A Richardson
