As a long-time
resident of Hilo, I have seen firsthand the negative impact these rentals can have on our
neighborhoods and quality of life.
One of the main issues with short-term vacation rentals is the lack of accountability and
regulation. These properties are often owned by absentee landlords who are more
concerned with profits than the well-being of our community. They may not live in the area,
care about their impact, or respect our neighborhood.
In addition, short-term vacation rentals can disrupt our community's peaceful nature. These
rentals often attract large groups of people looking to party and have a good time, leading
to excessive noise, littering, and other disturbances that make it difficult for residents to
enjoy their homes. "Hosted" STVRs need to be regulated as they also contribute to noise,
parking problems, and the breakdown of livable neighborhoods.
Finally, short-term vacation rentals can also drive up housing costs and reduce the
availability of long-term rentals. Landlords find that they can make more money by renting
their properties on a short-term basis, which can make it harder for families and individuals
to find affordable housing in our area.
For these reasons, I would like the Commission to take action to implement Bill 121. We
need to ensure that property owners are held accountable for their properties, that the
County has the regulations it needs for enforcement, and that our neighborhoods remain
safe and peaceful places to live and raise a family.
Thank you for your attention to this important issue.
Sincerely,
Cheryl S.
