Aloha Chairman Lin,
I am writing to express my deep concerns about the potential economic impact of Bill 121
on our local families and the broader economy of our island. As a resident of Hawaii, I
have witnessed firsthand how the income generated from Airbnb and other short-term
rental platforms plays a crucial role in supporting our local economy. Unlike hotels, where a
significant portion of profits are sent off-island, the income from these rentals stays right
here, directly benefiting our community.
Many of our neighbors, including a couple I know personally, rely on the income from their
short-term rentals to make ends meet. These individuals are not only contributing to our
economy but are also active volunteers and vital members of our community. The loss of
this income stream would not only affect their livelihoods but also reduce the overall
economic activity on our island.
Given the importance of this issue, I respectfully request the Planning Commission to
consider the following:
Conduct an economic impact study to fully understand the implications of Bill 121 on local
families and the economy.
Recommend streamlining the registration process and eliminating invasive requirements
that could hinder the operation of short-term rentals.
Recommend removing dangerous signage requirements and protect operators from the
public disclosure of addresses and ownership, ensuring their safety and privacy.
It is crucial that we find a balance that allows our island to thrive economically while
addressing any concerns related to short-term rentals. I believe that with thoughtful
consideration and input from all stakeholders, we can achieve a solution that benefits our
entire community.
Mahalo nui for your attention to this matter.
Me ke aloha pumehana,
