Subject: Re Short Term Rentals on Hawaii Island
Date: Tuesday,April 16,2024 7:33:43 AM
Aloha,
This is very concerning to my husband and I that you wish to discontinue
short term rentals or continue to tack on more and more taxes.
We are both in our 80s and have been Hawaii resident for 40 years and 24
years respectively.
As a former lawyer and teacher who now live very simply and who run an
organic farm in order to provide healthy food for our community on Hawaii
Island,we need to continue to maintain our home as a vacation rental in
order to afford to live in Hawaii.
I agree that folks shouldn't purchase multiple properties and be able to
then use those as rentals when they are not Hawaii residents.
One primary value for tourists to continue to use a vacation rental home
while visiting Hawaii is that they are then able to feed themselves and
their families in an affordable and healthy way. Many folks these days have
dietary concems and cannot often afford or find the food required in
restaurants.
Our home would not become a long-term vacation rental because property
taxes, utilities and other requirements to live here in Hawaii are so high
that a monthly income from our home would not be sufficient to pay for these
expenses.
Thank you for your understanding.
