I am writing to express my concerns regarding Hawaii Bill 121 and to request two important
actions that I believe are necessary for a fair and thorough evaluation of this measure.
Firstly, I urge the Leeward Planning Commission to return the bill to the County Council with
a strong recommendation to conduct a comprehensive, academically rigorous economic
impact study. I believe the numbers being cited are skewed and question the source of the
"math" as to how the positives outweigh the negative impacts of STVRs on Hawaii Island.
Secondly, I request that a member of the Ohana Aina Association be invited to participate in
the Q&A sessions regarding this bill. The absence of local industry representation in these
discussions is unfair and shows a bias towards mainland-based Hotel industry interests.
Including a member from the Ohana Aina Association would ensure that the commission
benefits from a comprehensive perspective and insights from those directly affected by the
bill.
These steps are crucial for a balanced review of Bill 121, allowing for informed decision-
making that considers the economic impacts and the voices of all stakeholders involved.
