Testimonial Letter in Support of PL-SPP-2023-000052
To: Chair Dennis Lin and Windward Planning Commissioners
From: Danielle Bartz
Aloha,
I'm writing to enthusiastically endorse the Hamakua Guesthouse's special permit application
(PL-SPP-2023-000052). As a previous guest, I can attest to the unique experience they offer
visitors seeking the essence of Hamakua. I am currently a resident of Pepe`ekeo and believe
that this guesthouse continues to foster connections within the community and support local
businesses such as Mr. Ed's and The Hive in Honomu, `Akaka Falls, as well as previous years
of support to what used to be the Low Store.
The guesthouse isn't just an accommodation; it's a springboard for cultural immersion and
connecting people. It offers a beautiful stay at an affordable price, with ocean and garden
views. It enables many tourists that couldn't afford to visit our beautiful state otherwise the
opportunity to come here and put their dollars towards boosting the local economy. More than
that, their commitment to sustainability through solar energy, water conservation, and
homegrown produce is truly admirable. When I stayed there years ago, while in the process of
moving to Pepe`ekeo from Oahu, I enjoyed picking a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables
from the garden. The owners and managers also offered exceptional hospitality to all of the
guests. The whole experience and essence that they have created there is genuinely something
special.
The Hamakua Guesthouse embodies the spirit of aloha and of our community, and its approval
is a win for responsible tourism and cultural preservation. Many lasting friendships and
relationships have been forged there. I urge the Commission's full support.
Sincerely,
Danielle Bartz
