Subject: We oppose the Kaupulehu Land LLC applications.
(PL-SLU-2022-000008) & (PL-REZ-2022-000039)
Aloha,
We are writing to show our opposition to the application by Kaupulehu Land LLC to covert a 5
acre agricultural parcel, TMK (3) 6-4-024:027, into Rural and Commercial zoning.
Waimea is and should remain the agricultural country town that it is. We ourselves purchased
40 acres next to Pu'unani subdivision over 10 years ago to preserve the agricultural land of
Waimea and not allow it to become an extension of the subdivision next to it. All of the
neighbors we talked with as we were re-fencing our property line said how glad they were that
we purchased it to use as ag land and not turn it into another development. When neighbors 2
lots over tried to turn their 10 acres into 6 residential lots they too met nothing but opposition
from all of our neighbors. True we need more housing, but without the ag lands how will all of
these people be fed. We are trying to become a sustainable state and not rely on food that is
shipped in from the mainland. How can this happen if we allow so much of our agricultural
lands to be turned into commercial and residential properties that our local families cannot
afford, just so that these land owners make a huge profit off these property conversions.
Something needs to be done to keep our local families here and not cause them to have to
move to the mainland because they cannot afford to buy or rent a home and feed their families.
Please be ones that help stop this vicious cycle of the rich getting richer and the wealthy moving
in at the expense of our local ohana.
Another concern we have is the traffic a 3-building commercial development will bring to an
area already congested roadway. There is not sufficient traffic management and safety for
vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists along this highway that is the only road leading into Waimea
from the Hilo side.
We appreciate your time in reading this written testimony and ask that you vote NO and not
approve this application.
Sincerely,
Gordon K. Kalaniopio Sherry L. Kalaniopio
