Aloha Commissioners,
My name is Ana Nawahine Kaho'opi'i. I am a
Waimea resident submitting testimony for
myself and my ohana.
We strongly oppose this development and have listed our specific objections below.
1) This is a clear example of spot zoning, urban
encroachment, and overdevelopment that will
adversely impact Waimea's rural community.
There is already an excess supply of vacant
commercial spaces in Waimea.
2) Rezoning prime agricultural lands (A -5a) to
commercial and residential does not comply with the
Hawai`i County General Plan.
4) This development is an example of property
speculation that will increase the property taxes
of Waimea residents.
5) This proposed development would cause
further traffic congestion in this area.
6) This project doesn't conform to the Waimea
Town policies of the South Kohala Community
Development Plan, which stipulates the
preservation of Waimea's sense of place,
responsible growth, environmental stewardship,
and affordable housing development.
