Friends of the Future, a 501c3 nonprofit corporation based in Kamuela is interested
in providing professional services to the County of Hawaii in the areas referenced
above.
The organization was founded in 1991 and has provided a wide range of services
to more than 110 community-based programs including grants management,
technical assistance, accounting, human resources, strategic planning, and
meeting facilitation.

Friends of the Future is pleased to submit this statement of qualification and interest to provide
professional services to the County of Hawaii.

Friends of the Future was founded by Kenneth F. Brown in 1991 and has continuously
maintained its 501c3 status and current registrations with the State of Hawaii since that time.
Over the past five (5) years, the average number of employees has been 15, with an additional
25 independent contractors and 40-50 volunteers.
Susan Maddox, the Executive Team Leader, has been with the organization since January
1996, and has more than 40 years nonprofit experience in Hawaii, as well as 12 years of
experience in the Hawaii for-profit sector. Her work experience includes human resources,
program manage-ment, facilitation and strategic planning, fund development, financial oversight
and technical assistance to emerging organizations. During her tenure at Friends of the Future,
more than 110 community-based programs have operated under the organization’s umbrella.
Currently there are 35 active programs, many of them connected to education.
For more than ten years (2010-2020) Friends of the Future served as fiscal sponsor for Baby
STEPS to Stronger Big Island Families. During that time,Friends of the Future was fiscally
responsible for annual, large early childhood education conferences attended by more than 300
early childhood professionals, and six (6) years of 21st Century Community Learning Center
activities in North Hawaii. Over the course these fiscal sponsorship, Friends of the Future
managed more than $1,400,000 in funding from the US Department of Education, Hawaii
Department of Education and Hawaii P-20.
Friends of the Future currently provides fiscal sponsorship, grants management and reporting,
accounting and human resources services to these projects:
Aloha MAP: Project Director Lilinoi Grace, gracelilinoi@gmail.com. For the past seven (7) years,
Friends of the Future has served as fiscal sponsor and technical support for a series of federal
Native Hawaiian Education grants which support tutoring, fields trips, career exploration and
STEM related activities for more than 2,000 students in grades K-12 at 12 West Hawaii public
schools. The four (4) Native Hawaiian Education Grants currently supporting the program for
2024-25 total $4,250,019 (a 50% increase over 2023-24).
Bond Memorial Library Restoration Project: Christine Richardson, Project Leader,
hawinini@hotmail.com. The 2-year project is to restore the 100 year old Bond Memorial Library
in North Hawaii. Friends of the Future serves as the fiscal sponsor. The project is funded by a
$200,000 State of Hawaii Grant In Aid and more than $800,000 in donations and grants from
business, individuals and foundations. The total restoration budget is $1M.
Early Childhood Education Career Pathway: Program Co-Leads, Brenda Watanabe,
brendawa@hawaii.edu and Janet Smith, janetasm@hawaii.edu. The program works with high
school juniors and seniors, and educational assistants currently working in early childhood
education centers to obtain early childhood education credit classes at Hawaii Community
College. Friends of the Future provides grants management, accounting and technical
assistance to the program team. Funded by grants from The two-year $263,000 program is
funded by the Harry & Jeannette Weinberg Foundation and the Samuel N. & Mary Castle
Foundation.
Hawaii Department of Education, West Hawaii Complex Area: Janette Snelling, West Hawaii
Complex Area Superintendent, janette.snelling@k12.hi.us. For more than 20 years, Friends of
the Future has received a number of Purchase of Service contracts to provide consulting and
facilitation services to the complex area office and to individual schools in the complex.
Combined total of contracts exceeds $100,000.
