To: Leeward Planning Commission
From: Kathryn Swiderski
Re: LPC meeting 11/21/24 HICDC subdivision application
Submitted: 11/18/24 to LPCtestimony(ihawaiicounty.,aov
Dear Commissioners,
For the upcoming November 21st LPC meeting, I write to comment on item 4 in
New Business concerning Hawaii Island Community Development Corporation
(HICDC) (PL-REZ-2024-000066).
I am a Waimea resident and member of Waimea Trails and Greenways, which has
advocated for Ke Ala Kahawai o Waimea (The Streamside Trail of Waimea) since
1994. Waimea Trails & Greenways is working hard to extend the Streamside Trail
from Waimea to the Kohala Coast, where it will link up to Ke Ala Kahakai
(shoreline trail) in the vicinity where Waiulaula Stream meets the coastline. The
extended streamside trail will offer important benefits to local residents including
land stewardship and stream protection, transportation and recreation alternatives,
and healthy lifestyle options.
Because this is a streamside trail and the streams from Waimea run through the
land that HICDC is proposing to develop, I would like the LPC to make sure land
is specifically made available for this County trail, following the stream and
extending to the coast. I request that any subdivision approval include provisions
for extending the trail and ensuring public access to it.
Thank you,
Kathryn Swiderski
