Mahalo,Angie!
Can you please tell me which page(s)of the application was revised? Rather than having the
commission go through the entire packet, it will be easier on the commission if I point out the specific
page(s).
Thank you,
Eva

RESPONSES TO COMMISION QUESTIONS
Public Access, Open Space, and Natural Resources Preservation
Maintenance Fund
1) Table E. Objective2. Denby Freeland will develop educational lessons
specific to Mahukona. What are Denby Freeland's qualifications?
Denby Freeland has been an educator for Hawaii Land Trust since 2019. She was
promoted to Director of Aina Education in 2022 to support HILT educators at all 8 of
our community preserves. Denby is a cultural practitioner, educator, and artist. She
graduated from Punahou School and earned her bachelor's degree at the University
of Washington, and a master's degree in education at Heritage College in
Washington. Denby's 26-year career interweaves education, art, and environment.
She has held positions at Hui Noeau Visual Arts Center, Hawaii Nature Center, and
Hawaii Land Trust and has run her own consulting business educating disabled
youth.
2) Why are the two largest TMKs (5-7-003:010 and 5-7-002:011) excluded from
the grant request?
That was unintentional. We intended to include the following TMKs:
357003010
357002011
357002027
357002036
357002037

4) How can we access the draft 5-year management plan and Master Plan?
The draft management plan and master plan are not yet ready for external review.
Based on our current planning timeline, it would be ideal for HILT and Hawaii County
to meet to review a draft around the second week of March 2025. While these are
intended to be "living" documents that are updated on an ongoing basis as
appropriate, we are aiming to complete the initial plans by the end of March, at
which point a copy will be shared with the County and other project funders.
5) Please provide more specific information regarding "travel and meetings"
expenses.
We've requested $2,500 for travel and meetings. Denby Freeland and Scott Fisher
live on Maui and must travel to Hawaii Island approximately 4 times each during the
program period to guide and supervise our Mahukona Aina Steward and Mahukona
Education Educator. We are estimating $150 per flight totaling $1,200. Rental cars
are estimated at $75 per day totaling $600, and gas refills are estimated at $25 per
trip totaling $200. The videographer for the educational video will have to fly to
Kona from Molokai with at least four large carry-on cases for his equipment and rent
a car. We've estimated $500 for this trip.
6) Section E on page 2 of the application needs to be completed.
Please see the attached completed.
