Women’s Leadership Project Rationale
HIWLF Re-start Campaign
1. Project Rationale
a. The County of Hawaii Committee on the Status of Women’s mission is to advocate for the rights
of women on the Island of Hawaii and to support and provide services and programs that help to
empower women.
b. One of the items approved in the CSW 2021-2022 budget was for the following:
The Hawaii Island Women’s Leadership Forum (HIWLF) would like to restart activities around the
island. Organizers would like to begin with a book club, starting with Abby Wombach’s Wolfpack
and Melanie Ho’s Beyond Leaning In. It’s likely the next summit could happen in 2023. On April
20, 2021, there was a motion to approve $1,000 to Friends of the Future as the fiscal sponsor for
the HIWLF to support 2022 leadership activities for women around Hawaii Island. Elena moved
and Shana seconded. All approved.
c. The above project did not take place due to the inability to procure the funds in time. The project
also didn’t take place in the following year due to ongoing transitions within the CSW.
d. This is a renewed request for the following:
The Hawaii Island Women’s Leadership Forum (HIWLF) recently revived its Charter Committee to
resume program planning for implementation around Hawaii Island for April-July 2025. Working
in partnership with Friends of the Future, the HIWLF and CSW propose to host leadership
workshops online and in-person. Funds are requested to support refreshments at in-person events
and supplies for decorations and education materials.
e. Being healthy is a challenge in itself. Leaders often find it more challenging to stay healthy
because of the competing demands on their time, energy and resources. Through virtual and live
activities around Hawai’i Island, women leaders will be able to participate in professional
development activities to re-engage and reconnect with each other while building back and
building on the established professional networks around Hawaii Island.
f. Through Friends of the Future as the fiscal sponsor for these activities, we propose to provide
food and supplies for 3 live events spread out around Hawai’i Island during the months of April –
July 2025. The trainers and presenters are currently being discussed by the HIWLF Charter
Committee and any member of the CSW is welcome to join the Charter Committee.
2. Project Budget
a. Facility Use – we will use State or County facilities so that there will be no facility use fees
b. Food for approximately 50 attendees at each event at $6 per person = $1,200
c. Supplies for decorations and educational materials at $135 per event = $800
d. Total = $2,000
