A.PROJECT OVERVIEW
We were able to continue to provide educational programs to local and visiting schools, and families.
In addition, Pōhāhā I Ka Lani has been partnering with other organizations to mālama Waipi'o Valley
Lookout PONC parcel. Local families and organizations continued to contact us to do protocol with
their family or groups at the site before heading into the valley. We also opened space to do
storytelling to groups wanting to hear mo’olelo of Waipi’o Valley and surrounding area. Through the
help of many, there has been much progress in the clean-up efforts. We are still finding old rusted
pieces of metal and a large amount of trash. We also brought in an excavator with a forestry mulcher
multiple times to help with the regrowth of bamboo in the back of the parcel and guinea grass
regrowth.
B.PROJECT ACCOMPLISHMENTS
We rented a chipper to help chip larger branches on the parcel and trees that were cut
down a few years ago. We hired an operator to help with leveling different sections of the
parcel. We continued to work with students from different schools and visitors. Schools
also asked us to host excursions in which students brought along their family to participate
as well. Expanded more partnerships with different organizations to assist with
stewardship programs. Continuing to offer more opportunities for Hawai’i island residents
and visitors to participate in programs we offer at the Waipi’o Valley Lookout PONC parcel.
PROJECT CHALLENGES
No PONC Funds coming in for 2023 made it difficult. We don’t have additional grants for
this project due to the way PONC is set up in which we need to reapply each year. We
tried to apply for grants but when we were asked to show documents granting us
stewardship of the PONC parcel for the time period the grant would be awarded, we did
not have any documents to provide. With this, we were not able to be awarded those
grants. It has been a struggle for our family and other families who continue to help us as
we needed to cover expenses for the entire year in addition to doing the physical labor to
care for the parcel. To accommodate requests coming in to host groups, to prepare the
site for families and other groups to utilize the space to do protocol and mo’olelo has been
difficult when needing to cover additional expenses beyond our typical costs for the groups
that we are hosting. This has been a challenge for us since our first year of stewardship in
2016.
The continuation of theft from gardens, finding human waste on the parcel, no water for
volunteers to wash their hands as needed has put an extra burden on the stewardship. A
huge section of the vetiver has been stolen so we are needing to start over with planting
vetiver to protect against erosion.
C.FUTURE PLANS RELATING TO THE PROJECT
We will continue to collaborate with schools and other organizations in addition to
welcoming many families/individuals to participate in our programs. Providing
opportunitites to learn and be part of caring for Waipiʻo Valley Lookout PONC Parcel.

*Please note, we only added in a budget to repair fencing and gates. The application was put in prior to the storm that took place
which damaged one of the heavy duty gates. The fencing that we had just installed prior to the storm was damaged as the tent from
those camping at the lookout blew up and took our fencing with it. Instead of repairing, we are in need of redoing the fencing and
replacing the gate (s). Costs are way more than what we had budget so we are almost complete but am waiting for funding to
come in.
