Experience
Insightshare has led impactful projects worldwide. Below is a list of selected
interesting projects that highlight the use of participatory video from Africa, South
Asia and the Americas. (See our full list of partners here
https//Insightshare.org/partners/)
1.Project Bhasa in Bangladesh (2024)
This project was initiated by the Centre for Injury Prevention and Research (CIPRB),
the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), and the George Institute for Global
Health, as a community-based initiative aimed at reducing child drowning in Barishal
Division, Bangladesh, where mortality rates are significantly higher than the national
average. Insightshare supported the project by implementing a participatory
Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) process using Participatory Video.
Impact The project supported community members to play a central role in
identifying, documenting, and evaluating the most significant changes brought by the
interventions. By using participatory video, participants highlighted key success
stories, helping to shape the program's approach to providing community-based child
care, swimming lessons, and first aid training, thereby addressing the multifaceted
causes of child drowning. This approach ensured that the solutions were directly
informed by the lived experiences and needs of the local community.
2.In Deep Waters Sustainable Water Solutions in Bangladesh (2024)
Participatory Video (PV) was introduced as a community engagement tool to
promote long-term sustainability. InsightShare introduced PV facilitation to
community members, representatives, and staff from three communities supported
by Better with Water.
Impact Empowered Chattogram’s vulnerable communities to address water and
sanitation issues through participatory video, creating films that proposed
community-led solutions to local challenges.
4
3. Prosocial Word Training of Trainers in Latin America (2022)
Impact Insightshare partnered with Prosocial World and CollabSoul to integrate
participatory video into a program funded by the Templeton World Charity
Foundation. This initiative strengthened nine Latin American organizations working in
environmental conservation, education, and social change by capturing significant
stories of transformation through participatory video.
4. UN Decade of Healthy Ageing Participatory Video for Older People’s
Voice Amplification (2022)
The UN Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021-2030) aims to enhance the inclusion,
visibility, and agency of older people by amplifying their voices, promoting their
engagement, and fostering co-created solutions and bottom-up accountability. To
support this, the WHO’s Demographic Change and Healthy Ageing Unit, funded by
the Public Health Agency of Canada, launched a pilot project titled "Starting the
Decade of Healthy Ageing with the voices and engagement of older people." WHO
contracted HelpAge International (HAI) and Insightshare (IS) to reach older people
through HAI's network and deliver the Participatory Video (PV) methodology.
Insightshare contributed its expertise in PV to facilitate community engagement and
ensure older people’s voices were central to the project.
Impact In partnership with HelpAge International, Insightshare delivered a pilot
project funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada to amplify the voices of older
people as part of the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021-2030). The project used
participatory video to ensure older people’s diverse experiences and perspectives
were central to the global initiative..
5.Maasai Cultural Heritage Project (2020)
Participatory video (PV) training for Maasai community representatives led to the
reclamation of cultural narratives and heritage objects in UK museums. Key events
included historic healing ceremonies attended by over 10,000 Maasai and three
State Governors.
5
Impact Strengthened the Maasai's cultural resilience and advanced decolonization
efforts in international museums.
6.Climate Observation in Canada (2019)
Insightshare collaborated with Indigenous communities to document climate change
impacts through participatory video, blending traditional knowledge with scientific
research.
Impact Increased local climate resilience and shifted governmental approaches to
climate change through participatory video.

Descriptive literature
Insightshare’s toolkits and guides are comprehensive resources designed to support
communities and individuals use participatory video (PV) for social change. These
materials offer clear instructions, practical exercises, and real-world examples,
making them accessible to both newcomers and experienced facilitators. Key
publications include the "Participatory Video Handbook," which provides a detailed
exploration of PV methods, and the "Rights-Based Approach to Participatory Video,"
which incorporates human rights principles into community storytelling.
These guides support meaningful community engagement, allowing participants to
document their own stories and advocate for change. Whether addressing
6
environmental challenges, social justice, or cultural heritage, Insightshare’s toolkits
have been used globally to help communities share their perspectives and inspire
collective action. The resources promote inclusivity, ensuring that all voices are
heard and valued in the community development process.
Living Cultures Fellowship
The Living Cultures Fellowship is a one year (part time) programme that equips
Indigenous leaders with participatory video (PV) facilitation, community mobilisation,
advocacy, and digital activism skills. It has components of face to face training, with
regular access to remote coaching and digital resources. Fellows learn from
Indigenous trainers how to create impactful videos that address land rights and
cultural resilience. By producing community-authored films they foster local and
global dialogues with the essence of cultural pride and unity. Participatory video
allows Indigenous peoples to speak for themselves, from the heart, without
intermediation. Fellows document local challenges and strategies, honouring their
cosmovision and sharing visions for the future. The programme offers ongoing
mentorship and support networks, empowering participants to use PV for
campaigning, community mobilization, and influence, ensuring long-term impact
within their communities.
Through a combination of technical training and storytelling, fellows team up with
elders to produce films on traditional ecological knowledge, developing digital
archives celebrating all that is valued, and that which is in danger of being lost.
Impact: Since its inception, the Living Cultures Fellowship has trained 50 young
leaders, many of whom have gone on to establish their own video hubs. These hubs
continue to support local communities, producing films that have been instrumental
in advocacy campaigns and discussions at the local and international level. Films
commissioned by InsightShare have played a key role in defending Indigenous land
rights, amplifying local perspectives on climate change at global forums such as the
United Nations. Through collaborations with BBC and Channel Four News these
stories have reached millions globally. Communities have used PV to successfully
advocate for their rights, bringing Indigenous perspectives directly into decision-
7
making processes. For instance in Pondoland, South Africa, the community
successfully blocked Shell Oil from conducting seismic surveys that would have
irreversibly damaged their ocean resources. PV has enabled Maasai communities to
resist land grabs through international advocacy, and to revive their pre-colonial
governance systems to reunite the Maa Nation. Coastal communities in Kenya have
used PV to help revive mutual aid systems, and in Nagaland, India the our partners
are documenting traditional food systems, including the wisdom of Seedkeepers to
retain their sustainable lifeways.

Insightshare Partners - Awakening Lands
Awakening Lands focuses on addressing the root cause of human and
ecological suffering, which they identify as the "diseases of separation." They
draw on teachings like the Buddha’s concept of the Delusion of Separation,
highlighting how historical developments such as colonization,
industrialization, and globalization have distanced humanity from its ecological
roots. Awakening Lands aims to reconnect people with these origins to heal
the disconnection from nature and better tackle the pressing environmental
challenges of our time.
Benji Ross is a visionary leader and co-founder of Awakening Lands, which
started as a podcast sharing stories of leaders in local regenerative
movements. Under Benji’s guidance, it has evolved into an incubator
supporting facilitators and storytellers in organizing and training efforts.
Through this work, Benji explores "Place Attunement," a pattern of ecological
reconnection where individuals and groups engage in healing and fostering
flourishing in local ecological and social systems. He is dedicated to
developing and sharing processes that unify these stories and training
facilitators to inspire and enhance existing community efforts, bringing greater
coherence and vitality to regenerative practices.
Anna Castonguey is a facilitator and community organizer with a background
in behavioural science, focusing on renewable energy, resilience, and
therapeutic treatment. As a co-founder of Awakening Lands, she promotes
"Place Attunement," which seeks to heal local ecosystems through
storytelling.

Nick Lunch
Executive Director & Co-Founder
Profile Nick has 30 years experience of community and development practice and is recognised
globally as a pioneer of participatory video (PV) methodology, used to enable groups to document
their knowledge, ideas and innovations and open equitable dialogue with different stakeholder
groups and policy-makers. His passion for the methodology grew from experimenting in handing
over control of the camera and film project to Indigenous youth in Nepal in 1996. He co-founded
InsightShare in 1999, with his brother Chris, and has helped lead the organisation through an
eventful journey of ongoing learning, and evolution. Today his focus is on honing the organisation’s
capacity building skills, working with community animators to support a growing grassroots
participatory video movement, The Living Cultures Alliance. He has worked on over 100
international PV projects starting in Nepal, Zimbabwe, and Cuba and lately focussing in Asia and
Africa. His work began with marginalised young people on council estates around Oxford, UK,
providing a creative outlet for those excluded from school and even local youth clubs. Combining
participatory video with the Local Agenda 21 ethos for a sustainable future, Nick was able to
engage youth in constructive community action, supporting their journeys to become leaders and
changemakers in their communities.
Since 2005 Nick has led in the use of participatory video with Indigenous communities where
video technologies are being used to document and revive local knowledge, to enable and
facilitate knowledge-sharing and solidarities, and strengthen resilience for the future. Of particular
interest is the role PV technology is playing in bridging the widening gap between generations in
traditional societies.
Through his focus on capacity building and training Indigenous women and youth as facilitators,
Nick has led the development of a global network of autonomous community media hubs and
fellowship programmes now spanning 4 continents. The idea of having cultural hubs is having a
big impact on the future through strengthening the social fabric of communities, as young people
feel the joy of being cultural creators and being part of a community.
Nick has acted as an adjudicator to assess funding proposals for several foundations including
Wellcome Trust UK, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Canada, and Wise Awards
Qatar.
Throughout his career Nick has worked with UN Agencies, and on numerous occasions has
been invited to speak at UN Headquarters; as well as numerous other conferences and forums,
including IUCN World Congress, The World Leadership Summit, Bioneers, UN Roundtable on
Communications for Development, Institute of Development Studies (IDS), Universities of Oxford,
Newcastle, Coventry and Seville, and the Smithsonian Institute. Today, as Insightshare celebrates
our 25th Anniversary, Nick's focus is on honing the organisation’s capacity building skills, working
with community animators to support a growing grassroots participatory video movement.

Awakening Lands
Learning and Facilitator Network for Place Attunement
Let us not waste our hour of suffering. This general idea is a universal truth that has appeared in
wisdom traditions throughout our species'varied history. It is so often suffering that detaches us
from who we thought we were, that gives us new eyes and an opening heart to seek
transcendent possibilities. We find ourselves in a moment in time on Earth where shared
biological, ecological, and social suffering may offer the pathway and the dynamic will to
become something we weren’t capable of becoming otherwise.
At Awakening Lands,we have found a deep resonance with people when we point to the root
cause of our suffering as the diseases of separation.Separation seems to be fundamental to the
human experience and how our minds work,as evidenced by the Buddha who pointed to the
Delusion of Separation as the root of all human suffering,2500 years ago.The Buddha revealed
that it is in large part cravings, discomfort with the present moment, and want for control that
leads to our delusion. With the expansion of things like colonization, the Scientific Revolution,
industrialization, and globalization,we find this impulse for separation and want for control
resulting in shared human stories, cultures, and built environments that abstract us away from
our ecological origins, that have formed a sort of real life Matrix that we now inhabit. We now
find ourselves largely blind to and ill-prepared to address the accelerating diseases of our
planet.
How do we come back into a healthy and flourishing relationship with the rest of life?
Humans experience reality through story. It’s time for us to attune to different stories. At
Awakening Lands,we’re exploring ways that voices of the land itself along with its people can
reveal a mix of new and old stories as we enliven latent place-based values and identities.
We are well on our way to making the project of defining “place attunement”a collective process
of discovery. We are asking ourselves how reconnecting from a mechanized paradigm into
holistic membership with our places requires that we learn to attune to the land and life so many
of us have long overlooked. We are first doing so simply by exploring the various ways that
place attunement is already happening, then inviting often siloed and separated place healing
and flourishing efforts to see themselves as mission and purpose aligned. The doorway to
connection is reliably found through gratitude for an emerging sense of wholeness of place.
The organizational structure we are developing to support this is primarily twofold.
First,we are incubating teams of facilitators and storytellers in places to develop ArgGIS
StoryMaps that document and share the process in an engaging and multimedia format. These
StoryMaps share how people and groups are already attuning to place. In order to reveal more
of it,facilitators are hosting workshops, participatory storytelling, and community conversations.
The second organizational structure we are developing is a pilot program for a Place
Attunement Facilitator Training Cycle. For now we are including a set of eight modules, starting
with the forest green box on the top-right to form an initial fluency of the importance of place. It
then moves clockwise:
In each module,we are inviting a support team and experts to discuss the topic,to hear from
facilitators on-the-ground,and to deliver insights and activities to facilitators that can grow the
practice of place attunement overall. The design of this program and this initial pilot is being
informed by living systems design principles, led by experts on our team that specialize in that
field of study and have experience working with businesses and educational institutions.Living
systems principles are the inspiration behind the cyclical pattern, the feedback with
on-the-ground place attunement initiatives, the open timelines, the emphasis on dialog, and the
formation of deep relationships to hold and guide it all.
We hope that these concepts and this emerging story has led to an insight or two as well as
some inspiration. The process of dropping out of the Matrix and healing our diseases of
separation will take a lot more of that.

cultivate flourishing in local ecological and social systems. We are seeking
opportunities to build a community of like-minded, place-focused healers and
