1950 due to damage from 1946 tsunami.
► Rebuilt on Hawaii Belt Road railroad bridge
► Retains integrity of setting, design, materials, and workmanship despite alterations, including
1973 decking replacement
► Retains original open-deck design, preventing lifting action by tsunami waves
► Included the use of steel, rare in extreme marine environment of Hawaii
► Associated with master engineer William R. Bartels
► Associated with the "Seismic Wave Damage Rehabilitation Project" and major transportation
improvements
► Included in the Pu'u'eo historic District and proposed Hilo Historic District

► Components of 20th century HCR alignment infrastructure
► Six kuleana lots may contain subsurface evidence of older, traditional Hawaiian occupation of
the Hilo Bay area.
► The Project is anticipated to have an "Adverse Effect" on the historical integrity
of the Wailuku River Bridge (36 CFR 800.5(a) (1 ))
► No direct impacts to historic properties and districts are anticipated, and indirect
impacts are limited to visual change to bridge alterations
