Aloha Commissioners,
As a resident of Upper Puna, I have numerous concerns about the proposal you will
be hearing from Mlama One at your next meeting.
I hope that you will ask questions and also provide their presentation to the public for
further review, as I cannot find it linked in your agenda or meeting packet.
My understanding is that they are saying they do not need any further permits or
authorization to proceed and there may or may not be any other opportunities for the
public to weigh in on their proposal. I find that alone to be extremely concerning and
encourage you all to schedule a follow-up opportunity within your Commission for
additional public information if this indeed seems to be the case. One opportunity for
the public to comment on this is not enough.
What entity is responsible for monitoring this proposal for compliance with all County,
State, and Federal laws regarding environmental waste management?
How are they able to ensure there is not going to be any adverse impact on our
environment or resources as this in "new" technology?
Overall, we want to see a reduction in single use plastics. Won't this proposal
encourage MORE plastic use and bring more single use plastic and the micro-
plastics that are generated by recycling these products into our ecosystem?
I have also heard about toxic byproducts that will be generated by this project, a sort
of plastic "sludge" that will need to be transported to our landfill. Has this been taken
into account and approved of? If so, by what entity? How much will be transported?
Have we taken into account the trucks and transport of this sludge and is there some
way that they are accounting for this in their plan of "sustainability"?
Please ask these and other important questions and then allow for another
opportunity for the public to weigh in on this project with more information.
Mahalo,
Shannon M.
