FIRE CHIEF’S REPORT
April 9, 2003
Budget
• Budget review with Finance Committee meeting on 3-13-03.
Alternative Funding and Grants
• Denial of Hilo Shippers Wharf grant funding.
• Deputy Chief working with Civil Defense and Police Department on ODP (Office of
Domestic Preparedness) grant to acquire HazMat and US&R equipment.
• USFA (U.S. Fire Administration) grant application to be submitted by this Friday,
April 11 requesting equipment totaling $414,900. County match is 30% or $124,470.
Capital Improvement Projects
• Plans in draft for Kalaoa Fire Station.
• Received estimated costs from Public Works for construction of Fire
Administration/Support complex.
Promotions and Hiring
• Dispatch applicant interviews scheduled for April 14, 2003. 12 candidates to be
interviewed for two positions.
• Awaiting approval from Civil Service prior to implementation of our Internal
Recruitment Procedures.
Operations Division
• Standardization committee approved MSA SCBA proposal. Will be working on
purchase plan.
• Re: Fern Forest helicopter landing zone. Developing community sensitive and safety
plans for rescue operations.
Prevention Division
• Working to renew Kihara’s contract.
• Developing a partnership with Honolulu Fire Department for specialized training of
inspectors.
Training Division
• HOVE Truck training on April 15-17, 2003.
• Recruit class update.
Volunteer Division
• Volunteer Fire Chief’s meeting held on 4-5-03 at HPP. Next meeting on July 19.
EMS Division
• Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act (HIPPA) effective 4-14-03, re:
patient privacy rights.
Fire Auxiliary Services
New Projects/Business
• Emergency cabinet meetings at EOC since war.
• Deputy Chief attends regular Project Kumiai meetings, a mechanism to bring together
appropriate leadership in the community to focus on engaging citizens in homeland
security for promoting community preparedness and family safety.
• Fire RMS update. Meeting on 4-14-03.
• SARS Virus update.
• World Sprints event (canoe regatta) on August 15-22, 2004.
• Results of 1st annual Recognition & Awards dinner on 3-16-03.
Public Relations
• Mother’s Day project-for American Cancer Society.
• EMS 5K Fun Run/Walk and Family Day on June 1, 2003 at Coconut Island.
• Sayre Foundation dinner on April 12.
